A social and outdoor day today. Primo came by to fix the plumbing (he’ll be back tomorrow).

HARC (Hawaii Agriculture Research Center)
Chifumi Nagai from Hawaii Agriculture Research Center (HARC)
stopped by for a cup a coffee and to pick up some of the Kunia coffee we milled and roasted (a nice mix of multi variety coffees harvested at the coffee research station). HARC specializes in horticultural crop research and provides a good deal of information and consulting for the Hawaiian Coffee and Cacao industry, developing new coffee cultivars and a better understanding of the science of agriculture and its application for the farmer. http://www.harc-hspa.com/
We took a drive in the fields and noted the heavy fruit bearing on the Waialua Typica trees. Saw a bit of ripe red cherry scattered through the trees as well.

Dole Plantation Store
Next stop, Dole Plantation Store, looks busy in there, a good sign that visitors are still coming to Hawaii and looking for a cool Dole Whip Pineapple treat. They also like to buy gifts and Omiyage and are finding a bargain on the Waialua Coffee and Chocolate that are becoming very popular items.

While there I chanced to meet some friends from Kodiak Alaska who run the Mill Bay Coffee Roastery and Pastry Shop. http://www.millbaycoffee.com/
Joel Chenet and his wife Martine are gourmet French chefs with some wonderful recipes using coffee rubs to flavor many dishes. I invited them on a tour of the

farm and asked them to join me in a cupping with Piper Jones, visiting from Kohana Coffee Company in Austin Texas, one of our long time roaster partners bringing a taste of aloha to Texas.

Joel Chenet of Mill Bay Coffee & Piper Jones of Kohana Coffee in the tasting room.
We all sat around tasting chocolate and different roasts of Waialua Coffee talking and sharing ideas on brewing, marketing, blogging etc.
Afterwards we went over to the old Waialua Sugar mill where John Alvarez was roasting for Coffee Gallery Haleiwa and we talked story with him for awhile as well.

Its a great day when I get to spend time with these

John at Coffee Gallery Haleiwa
friends from all walks of the coffee world strolling in the field, checking on the state of the crop, talking story with researchers, growers, roasters, retailers and customers. A full circle of the supply chain with a great wealth of knowledge and experience. Thank you all for coming by and sharing some time with me today. See you again. Aloha, Derek
